Growing up struggling, having financial issues, Choie Sew Hoy aspired to change that lifestyle he was living in China. As Soon as he was 13, Choie rushed out of the country with some fellow extended family to California after receiving the news of a gold rush. After exceeding well enough, he was able to marry and carry on 4 kids. Until similar news from had also happened in Australia - another gold rush. Sailing to Melbourne, he had a realization. Choie instead didn't want to be part of the labor but the provider.
He decided to be a merchant. After carrying out decision, Choie received riches, success and fame. Though life in early NZ had Chinese-racism. Communities protested for Chinese to be expelled and less to come but Choie being the supportive and reasonable man he was, he explained how the British had declared that NZ would allow Chinese to come within NZ and not be treated as harshly. After growing his business, Choie had a few riches left to provide within the community and he used his reputation to help incoming Chinese be comfortable entering NZ. Choie Sew Hoy was kind of a pioneer within the business industry in early NZ time.
